My name is Andrew Bailey and I‘m very tired! Tired of all the crap in the world of management. Upper, middle and lower and all the levels in between. So many people like the sound of the title ‘manager’ but very few know how to be one. Some are timid and ineffective while others just start out by being a total A hole because they think that now they have the power over their colleagues and it’s expected of them to act that way. After all, the literal definition of the word manager is: “somebody who is responsible for directing and controlling the work and staff of a business, or of a department within it” (Encarta® World English Dictionary, North American Edition). While the definition is a correct one, it does not mean however that by “controlling the work and staff of a business” that management at any level have to behave like dictators!
I have been in various management roles for nearly 15 years. I have worked for small husband and wife companies to large telephony companies. When I left school, I started a contract cleaning business and employed a handful of people in the process. After about 10 years, I sold that and went to work for a large telephony company. I started in sales and worked my way up the corporate ladder. My world quickly fell apart when a telephony company I worked for went bankrupt. I was the Sales Manager in charge of the mobile phone division. After that, I worked for various mobile phone retailers as a store manager. Not as exciting as the role I had before but it paid the bills. Along the way I met so many people, male and females who were in management positions that really shouldn’t have been there. It always made me wonder how they really got the job in the first place (but that could be a topic for another time). After a few years of that, I decided to quit and start working for myself again and I have done that for the last 3 years now.
My whole aim with this blog is to present some short, simple and straight forward articles with insights into some of the situations a manager will face, how to be in control of your area, how to deal with difficult sales people, how not to act like an A hole and more. You can have all the qualifications on paper in the world but nothing replaces experience in the job. I have always believed in a simple no nonsense approach to life’s challenges and believe me, if you are a new manager or a seasoned one, sometimes you need all the help you can get.
Cheers
Andrew Bailey
